Welcome
to the Haitian Independence Bicentenary Conference website from the joint coordinators of the event, Dr Elizabeth Walcott-Hackshaw, and Dr Martin Munro.

In a year of many celebrations, seminars, and colloquia across the world, we are pleased to present to you our conference, which has attracted close to one hundred speakers from four continents, and which promises to be a unique and memorable event for the University of the West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago, and the region as a whole. For registration information, click on the Accommodation and Registration link or phone: (868)662 2002, ext. 2035, 2032, 3024, or 3026.

Our speakers include many major regional and international intellectuals and scholars such as Lloyd Best, Bridget Brereton, Louis–Philippe Dalembert, Edwidge Danticat, J. Michael Dash, Kathleen Gyssels, Laënnec Hurbon, Dany Laferrière, Yanick Lahens, Maximilien Laroche, H. Adlai Murdoch, Rex Nettleford, Marie–Agnès Sourieau, Évelyne Trouillot, and Derek Walcott. Presentations will deal with diverse aspects of Haitian culture, history, society, and together will reinterpret the revolutionary legacy in Haiti, the Caribbean, and beyond. For more information on the panels, click on the Schedule link.

Special events include, on Wednesday 16 th June at 7 p.m., an evening of readings and commentaries by two of the region’s finest writers, Derek Walcott and Edwidge Danticat. This will be a unique opportunity to hear these two read from their work, and to compare and contrast how they interpret Haiti, history, and the revolution. All those who register for the conference will gain entry to the event, and a limited number of tickets will be available to the public on a first come first served basis. For more details on the event and on how to obtain tickets, please phone: 662 2002, ext. 2035, 2032, 3024, or 3026.

The conference finale will be another very special event: Derek Walcott will direct an original theatre production, which draws on his Haitian plays and evokes Aimé Césaire’s La Tragédie du Roi Christophe. Actors from St Lucia and Trinidad will provide a stirring climax to the conference. The venue for the play is the School of Continuing Studies Auditorium, Gordon Street, St Augustine. The Friday night performance will be for conference participants and invited guests only, while the two further shows on Saturday and Sunday will be open to the public. Tickets for the Friday and Saturday shows will be available from the Conference Secretariat, and will cost $75 and $50 (students), There is sure to be a big demand, so please book early.
